Is UV Light for My AC or Furnace Worth It?

September 08, 2020

You probably know that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) is to blame for your painful sunburn. But did you realize that another variety of ultraviolet light can be installed to keep your residence’s air clean?

The sun emits two types of damaging UV rays, UVA and UVB. These damaging rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other types of premature aging.

There’s another variety of UV light, called UVC. While unprotected exposure to this ultraviolet light is harmful for your skin or eyes, it can safely be applied to clean air, water and certain surfaces.

Northglenn Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. uses this light in several of our solutions to enhance air filtration in Northglenn residences.

Applications for Ultraviolet Light

This distinct wavelength is classified as “germicidal” as it wipes out the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens travel through this light, they eventually die since they can’t multiply.

This makes UVC light a mighty replacement to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is used in a lot of disinfection uses, including medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also applied to sterilize drinking water and other liquids made in food processing.

It’s becoming a popular choice to disinfect air in homes in Northglenn. That’s because it can also eliminate typical indoor contaminants like mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an added benefit for loved ones who deal with seasonal allergies or asthma.

Using Germicidal UV Light in Your House

We place a germicidal UV light in your HVAC system’s ductwork. Because the light is set within the ductwork, it makes it compatible with many heating and cooling equipment. This also keeps its rays safely confined while giving strong cleaning for your house’s air.

Filthy air is freshened in a two-step process, first traveling through your air filter and then the UV light in advance of circulating around your home. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t working, these lights still work to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort unit clean.

This whole-house option is superior to a portable air purifier, which is restricted to cleaning the air in a single space. Portable air purifiers also can’t clean your ductwork or the interior of your HVAC unit. A clean HVAC system is typically a more efficient one that can even run for an extended period of time. And, many portable air purifiers are notorious for creating ozone.

When thinking over buying a germicidal lamp for your house, it’s essential to choose one that doesn’t make ozone. While ozone is good at getting rid of odors and chemicals, it may also irritate your lungs and cause other respiratory troubles.
